1 The 5 month offer period applies from the date of account opening. Balance transfers must be made within the first 60 days of account opening to be eligible for the 0% promotional rate. If you make a balance transfer later within the 60 day period, you will enjoy 0% for a shorter amount of time. For example, if you carry out a balance transfer 30 days after account opening, you will only get 4 months of 0% interest on that transfer. If you do not make at least your contractual minimum payment in full and on time or if you go over your credit limit, your promotional rate will be withdrawn and you will pay the standard balance transfer rate (as shown on your statement) on any balance outstanding. When the offer period ends you will pay the standard balance transfer rate on any remaining balance transfer balance. Additional terms and conditions apply.

Build your credit score

By saving money on interest, you could pay down your balance, which could improve your score if you don’t spend further on your card.

The more you owe on your other credit cards and the higher the interest rates on those cards, the more you could save. If you pay off your balance in full before the end of any balance transfer 0% period, you won’t pay any interest. You should take into account any fee before completing a balance transfer, to make sure it still saves you overall.

How do balance transfer credit cards work?

A balance transfer credit card gives you the financial flexibility to transfer the balance from one card to another. You might make a balance transfer to save money on interest by moving your balance to a card with a lower interest rate, or if you have multiple cards, to consolidate* your balances to a single account. Before you apply for a balance transfer, it’s a good idea to check the transfer fee, which will vary between lenders.

What is a balance transfer fee?

A balance transfer fee is a fee that credit card companies charge to move your balance from one card to another, and is usually a percentage of the amount you want to transfer. With Aqua, a fee of 3% (minimum £3) is applied to each balance transfer. The fee will be shown on your monthly statement following the transfer.

You should factor in the balance transfer fee when you’re choosing a card to transfer a balance to, as it will be added to the balance on that card.

Our expert advice on balance transfers

A balance transfer can be a great way to manage your debt repayments by enabling you to save money on interest if the rate on the card you are transferring to is lower, or consolidate balances onto one card.* Just be sure to keep up with your monthly repayments, take note of any fees, and the standard interest rate you'll be charged when any promotional period ends.

Sharvan Selvam, Commercial Director

*Make sure you consider whether consolidating your credit card debt is the right option for you. Compare the rates of interest on the cards including the rate charged after any initial 0% offer period plus the balance transfer fees before you go ahead.
